a beautifully produced and design doc.
I wish it had been directed more at the aspect of the environmental impact and provocation which is truely at stake with this kind of development. by environmental i also mean the aesthetic implications of ‘MacCastles’ that do not leave much room for creative adaptation. As for isolationism, I would not blame suburban design for that as it is a reflexive symptomatic response to a complex assemblage of consumerism, freedom of individualistic life style choices, electronic accessibility, and among other things- affluence and lack of enemy. If societies were not independent and wealthy enough to support these insulated sprawl mall burbs, they would not exist. Case in point, gated communities will become more like the forest hills community over time as social classes are further separated and the haves get threatened. they will have their little protected malls, civic center and everyone will work from their home computer and wife swap in the party rental saunas. they will distinguish themselves over time (if they don’t kill each other) by augmenting their little hives with their own brand of feng shui. they wont want to have yards (full of pollen that their asmatic kids can not tolerate, and cant trust aliens to get near their possesions while doing yard work). things will come full circle and then we will all be cursing the chinese, as they gain economicallly, for sucking all the planetary juices with their big america cloned suburbs while clouds of pollution traverse the oceans and we cling on to our little avatar (second) lives and look back with sentiment to yogi bear in a long since pawned yellowstone playground.
its all transition… get ready - those macmansions with 6 bedroom and 2 children now will soon become family reserves with gramma and grandpa, aunts and uncles screaming and fighting for a bathroom like in italy. never know…but wont make a diff. if we can’t cant breath and don’t set an example of a prudently efficent and creative way to survive.
